Oct 26, 2015  Yoshi’s Woolly World, a warm and fuzzy new entry in the series, won’t quite change that by itself, but it serves as the best reminder in a long time that there’s a reason fans fell in love with that little green dinosaur in the first place.

I think that’s how Nintendo feels about Yoshi’s Island, the classic Super Nintendo platformer that many consider one of the greatest 2D side-scrollers ever made. Unfortunately, despite many attempts, sequels never matched the original’s brilliance. Yoshi’s Story, Yoshi’s Island DS, and Yoshi’s New Island have become afterthoughts.

Well, Nintendo’s trying again, this time with Yoshi’s Wooly World, which comes out on October 16 for the Wii U. This time, it’s hoping that some clever visuals can help this game flutter-jump over Yoshi’s Island imposing legacy.

What you’ll like

It’s adorable

Yoshi’s Wooly World is gorgeous. It has an arts and crafts-style, with most of the levels and characters created entirely out of yarn. And I really mean everything, including effects like water and lava. It’s not only visually impressive, but it’s also fun to see how creative the designers get as they try to make something like a waterfall look realistic with wool and lace.

Yoshi also looks great, and I love the way he transforms his body as he moves around. His feet turn into wheels when he starts running.

The music also stands out. It’s light and breezy, which fits the fanciful, light-hearted style of this Yoshi outing.

It plays like Yoshi’s Island

Gameplay-wise, Wooly World plays a lot like Yoshi’s Island. You can eat enemies and turn them into eggs, which you can then throw. You also have a flutter jump, which lets you hover across longer distance, and a butt stomp, which hurts tougher enemies and breaks certain obstacles. All of these elements work as well as they do in Yoshi’s Island, and any one who played that classic will definitely feel some good, nostalgic vibes when navigating Wooly World’s levels.

Amiibo costumes

Wooly World has simple Amiibo support, but it’s just as charming and cute as the rest of the experience. Connecting an Amiibo to the game unlocks a new color scheme for Yoshi. So, using a Mario Amiibo unlocks a Mario Yoshi. These designs are all delightful, and I loved playing levels as Yoshis dressed like Sonic, Mega Man, and Link.

What you won’t like

It’s often too easy

Yoshi’s Island is a challenge. It’s sequels have had a hard time matching that difficulty, often feeling like games designed only for children and not platforming fans. Wooly World is certainly harder than Yoshi’s Story, but it still often feels too easy. It just doesn’t depend on the same quick-thinking jumping and egg-shooting/ricocheting that make Yoshi’s Island great.

If you don’t care about searching for collectibles, you could easily breeze through most of the levels. Honestly, especially in the first half, looking for those hidden items is really the challenge. At least finding them unlocks extra levels and Yoshi costumes, so the incentive is decent.

The flutter jump feels too forgiving. You can do it over and over, and you don’t lose any height (or barely any) if you time it right. This means that you can essentially fly over many of the extended platforming sections, floating over intended platforms and challenges. Bosses also feel too easy, with predictable patterns and easily avoidable attacks.

The last half does feel closer to an acceptable difficulty, and the last world of levels actually offer a decent challenge. Even the bosses begin to feel a little tougher. I just wish that the difficulty curve felt more balanced. I understand that you need to ease players into things, but Wooly World holds back for too long.

Bad co-op

Wooly World offers two-player co-op, but it’s not worth it. Two players quickly crowd the screen and get in each other’s way. You can eat the other player and turn them into an egg, which is useful if you’re otherwise out of ammo, but you’ll often accidentally swallow the other player when you’re aiming for something else. Also, Wooly World’s level design focuses a lot on finding hidden items, which becomes difficult when two players are trying to move the screen in different directions.

Conclusion

Yoshi’s Wooly World is an adorable game, and it’s often a fun one. However, the light difficulty prevents it from reaching the excellence of Yoshi’s Island. It’s still the best Yoshi adventure since that classic, but no one is going to bring up Wooly World in future “best platformer ever” discussions.

Yoshi's Woolly World is the first Yoshi game to be on a home console since the Nintendo 64. This game has a yarn art style, similar to Kirby's Epic Yarn. The gameplay is very similar to the Yoshi's Island games, but without any whiny babies to carry and chase after. Thank goodness!

The game received a port for the Nintendo 3DS, aptly titled Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, which added even more amiibo and the ability to create custom Yarn Yoshi skins, among other extras.

mapdata has 42 archives for test maps. This seems to be used to test out various things such as engine rendering.

Epic Yarn Map Data

In mapdataepic_yarn_kirby, there are 78 stages which quite obviously belong to Kirby's Epic Yarn. However, these might be the files that contain the coordinates of certain map objects à la Super Mario 3D World, or XML-styled formatting.

A simple stage with a few objects placed around. The stage appears impossible to complete, due to missing objects being replaced with placeholders.

TEST_UV_REGULATION_X4

This stage appears to be a slightly different version of the stage that was shown in Nintendo Direct 23 January 2013. Objects are missing from the stage and are instead replaced with placeholders, most likely due to the object data being missing from the game. It's not possible to complete the stage, as you can't travel to the other side. The level may also lack a goal ring entirely.

MAP001_MARUTA_MASTER

One of the more detailed unused stages in the game. It appears that Yoshi would have been able to switch between the foreground and background at least once during this stage, but due to missing objects, it's impossible to do so, and as such not possible to complete the stage.

Test Folder

In the root of the game, there is a test folder full of objects, shaders, and some Miiverse stamps. Shaders and Miiverse stamps are split into two different folders called shader and body_memo_sample.

There are three test shaders within this directory.

body_memo_sample

This directory seems to have been used for testing out the Miiverse features, such as stamps. While the final game does have stamps, these are done in a very different style. The folder also has .tga and.gtx versions of the stamps, along with an SDK tool for converting .tga images to .gtx called tga2gtxTEstTool.bat (sic). There is also a very humorous drawing of a Swapnote envelope with a body saying 'Hi'.

Character Test Data

In charatest, there is leftover data for a test character. It may have been used for animation testing of some sort according to the archive size of TESTANIM00.gfa being around 2.4mb in size.

Coins

Located at /test/tr_coin_yellow and /test/tr_coin_red are models for the coins and the red coins like the ones found in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Sequenced sounds exist for the objects in the bfsar.

Despite the fact that the American version was released four months after all other versions and unlike more recent Nintendo games which had two completely different English translations, the American and Australian/European versions have only minor textual differences.

Yoshi's Woolly World Guide

The red and blue variations of this enemy were previously translated as Gargantua Blargg and simply Nep-Enut respectively in English localizations of the Yoshi's Island series. The European localizers apparently didn't notice that no small version of a Nep-Enut exists in this game, or in any Yoshi game for that matter. This was caught by the North American release.

Internal Project Name

Yoshi's Woolly World's project name is Merino according to the game's text archive. Merino is a sheep breed that is commonly used for their wool.
